Introduction to Beekeeping

Full weekend course August 20-21, 2016

Presenter: David Elms
Time: 9am - 5pm
Venue: G Place (Former Golden Point Primary School), 102 English Street, Golden Point, Ballarat

Over the weekend, David will cover the fundamentals of beekeeping, including topics such as:

  • the life cycle of a bee
  • the life cycle of a hive - including swarming behaviour
  • personal equipment required for beekeeping
  • hives and hive equipment
  • options for sourcing second-hand equipment
  • extracting and storing honey
  • sources of pollen and nectar - including seasonal cycles of eucalypts and supplementary pollen and nectar sources
  • fixed vs migratory beekeeping, including options for sourcing bee sites
  • bee diseases - their detection and treatment
  • bee pests - their detection and treatment
  • DPI registration and regulatory requirements
  • apiary clubs in Geelong, Melbourne and Bendigo
  • recommended apiary textbooks
  • specialist apiary skills (queen rearing, pollination services, etc) will be mentioned but cannot be covered in a short course like this

Course participants will also have the option of joining David when he is 'working' his hives. The timing of the workshop  is designed to allow people to make a firm decision on whether or not to keep bees and then acquire equipment before 'swarm' season later in the year. Collecting swarms is a cheap way to build up your hives. It is also recommended that participants attend one of the regional club meetings.
