Wicking Bed Setup Workshop

We had an amazing first Build it with Barry workshop where participants learnt about the basics of wicking beds and help Barry set some wicking beds up in his glasshouse.

These were IBC wicking beds, and we added metal cladding to make them beautiful and protect the plastic from breaking down in the sun. Each Wicking bed includes a worm compost tube in the centre to allow in bed composting.

The beds will serve a number of purposes including:

  • Obtain a yield - Produce fruit and vegetables earlier and later in the season
  • Act as a heat sink - with their water reservoir the beds should help to even out the temperature extremes in the glass house
  • Recycle waste and nutrients – with the worm bins in the centre of each bed it is expected that these beds will be able to recycle their nutrients in place, small weeds and trimmings will be able to placed directly into the bins
